Snakes, Snakes, and More Snakes : All my life I have loved all kinds of animals and have always been attracted to Reptiles, especially snakes. Although I am fascinated by these awesome creatures I understand that many people are not, however snakes have been intriguing man from as far back as Biblical times! Snakes have been used in so many symbolic ways over time, the Hopi Indians perform their ceremonial Snake Dance, a water ceremony. Originally the snakes were seen as the Guardians of the springs. The bible makes many references to snakes, one of which is "Taking up Snakes, Drinking Poison, and a Prayer for Healing". In Scottish Folklore, Highlanders had a tradition of pounding the ground with a stick until the serpent emerged. The snake's behavior gave them a good idea of how much frost was left in the season. And these examples go on and on, however my vision is to find and share as much of the beauty of these often feared and misunderstood creatures! I hope that you can relax and enjoy my vision! The Bald Eagle ~ Haliaeetus Leucocephalus, Our National Bird : I have always been drawn to birds of prey and I have really been facinated by the Bald Eagle. Bald eagles sit at the top of the food chain with man being the eagle's only real concern. Once a common sight in much of the continent, the Bald Eagle was severely affected in the mid-20th century by a variety of factors, the main one being the thinning of egg shells attributed to use of the pesticide DDT. The Bald Eagle was declared an endangered species in the U.S. in 1967 and in 1972 the use of DDT was banned in the United States. With regulations in place and DDT banned, the eagle population rebounded. In July of 1995, the US Fish and Wildlife Service upgraded the status of bald eagles in the lower 48 states to threatened. Bald Eagles were removed from the endangered species list in August 2007 because their populations recovered sufficiently. Bald and Golden eagles are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA)and the Bald and Golden Eagle Act (Eagle Act )

REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS (Frogs, Lizards,& Salamanders) : The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has declared 2008 the Year of the Frog to mark a major conservation effort to address the amphibian extinction crisis. Amphibians—frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts—are declining rapidly around the world. More than one-third of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction, with habitat loss and disease being two of the main culprits. Climate change and pollution are also causing amphibian decline. Amphibians are widely thought to be "canaries in the global coalmine." They live both on land and in water, and absorb oxygen and water through their porous skins, so they may be among the first to suffer from air and water pollution. The decline of this order of animals is worrisome for its own sake. But as sentinels for the rest of us, the amphibian crisis is a grave cause for concern.
