Mencken What Some Believe: "All hope abandon, ye who enter here" is the inscription fashioned by Dante for the gates of Hell. It was in no burst of poetic fancy that the sign, "Rosewood -- No Thoroughfare," was placed at the foot of the lane leading to the "training school" for the mentally deficient of Maryland; yet, that inscription is every bit as fitting as Dante's. Escape or death are virtually the only ways out for the unfortunate child committed there. Rosewood, was said to have been strictly a one way, dead-end street. The Rosewood Center is a psychiatric hospital located in Owings Mills, Maryland. It was established in 1888 as the Asylum and Training School for the Feeble Minded. From 1912 to 1961, it was known as the Rosewood State Training School. In 1961, the facility was renamed as the Rosewood State Hospital. After the state departments of health and mental hygiene merged in 1969, the facility was renamed the Rosewood Center. The antiquated facility has been threatened with closing in recent years. Throughout Rosewood's existence, there have been numerous reports of malpractice and mistreatment. Some have even made claims that patients were tortured on a regular basis. Further investigations proved positive leading to the older buildings' being condemned in 1989. The old and new facilities stand directly across a field from each other, the newer facility still active housing over half of the people with developmental disabilities who reside in Maryland's four state-run institutions. The old grounds have been known for ghost sightings and have been well traveled through. The main building was burnt in a 2006 case of arson and the site is now under security monitoring. On January 15, 2008, the state of Maryland announced that Rosewood would close within 18 months.

Rosewood's Burning : As my wife Janet and I were driving home on I-795 at shortly after 5pm (03-08-2009), we saw smoke billowing in the distance. Janet said; "I wonder whats burning, I hope that it's not our house!" At that point I looked up and I said "I'll bet that that is Rosewood!" I went home and grabbed my camera and unfortunately I was right! This was what was left of the main admissions building which was burned down in 2006. I have been documenting this place for quite some time and they have been working daily to tear this building down and today they had the help of this 2 alarm fire. I am very sad to see this go and hope that I will be able to help keep the story of "Rosewood the Asylum and Training School for the Feeble Minded" alive.

Social Study : A 2009 survey places the number of homeless people in Baltimore at 3,419 of which 1,000 live on the streets, as opposed to sleeping in shelters. As our economy continues to struggle, more people are finding themselves desperate. Holding on to not much more than a thread of hope, they do whatever is necessary to get through another day! Many of us don't want to make eye contact with someone who is homeless. To do this means being touched somewhere deep inside, and when touched like this, it hurts! We make excuses in our minds for why they are homeless, reasons that make us better than them so we don't have to think about the fact that one day, given the right (or should I say “wrong”) set of circumstances, this could be us. Baltimore County's homeless count has jumped by nearly 25% in the past year. 40% of homeless men are Veterans of War. These are all facts that force us to look within ourselves and face a reality that many of us would rather ignore. Like an ostrich with his head in the sand, we hope, maybe, just maybe, if we ignore it, it will go away!
